Interestingly, I just now clicked the write protect switch on/off,
re-inserted, and :

hub.c: USB new device connect on bus3/2, assigned device number 54
WARNING: USB Mass Storage data integrity not assured
USB Mass Storage device found at 54
SCSI device sda: 256000 512-byte hdwr sectors (131 MB)
sda: Write Protect is off
 sda: sda1

Mounted fine!

It is formatted as vfat - any point in reformatting ext2?

Maybe it is just a piece of s41t?
