Fedora-1 is exactly what RH-10 would have been,
so you'd almost certainly be better advised to go to Fedora.

Running Debian is the computer equivalent of chaining yourself to a tree.

If you really just want to run emacs and things like that,
I would have thought Fedora would suit you perfectly.

Debian basically is for geeks,
as the "simple" commands you are advised to give
to install a new kernel might suggest.
