That's definitely the way I'd do it on Fedora.  Works great.

Debian provides the rather nice make-kpkg tool (provided by the
kernel-package package), which is a wrapper for compiling kernels from
source and making an installable .deb from it, putting the .config file
as "config-nn.nn.nn" in /boot, etc.  Link "Information" on
