Yes, well, I was half hoping for a collateral emacs-vi war too, but
instead of invective and rhetoric I get a bunch of useful
information. Some things just don't work right!

Anyway, I've discovered a bit more about my machine, and now I want
to rephrase my query: is there ANY distro which will install on a
SATA drive? (Dell Optiplex GX270 w/ 120gb SATA drive.)

I've tried RH9 and Debian sarge, and both choke on the apparent
absence of a HD. Any solution that doesn't involve the use of a
screwdriver (i.e. putting in an IDE drive and installing on that as
per http://www.e-aiyama.com/~toshi/Computer/Linux/SATA.html).
