You need a kernel with USB support and modules compiled.  If you can read
from the device you must already have this though.  That's a pretty old
version of RH at this stage.

If not you need the usb_storage module which will in turn need a usb
usb_uhci, usbcore (I think those names are correct) though they should
most likely probe automatically.

One presumes you've not set read-only on the device itself.  You've mounted
it and can read from it yeah?  Check the output of the dmesg command and
look in /var/log/syslog
