Ah, ouch. Shame there doesnt appear to be a way to turn hardware 
csums on/off on a per protocol or socket basis.

Hmm, wow. Any pointers on how that's achieved?

Congrats anyway. You should write up a paper on this, "Tuning the
b*llocks out of linux: How heanet got Linux to scale to thousands of
connections and ~500MBit/s sustained rsync, ftp and http traffic" :)
