How do you know it's the driver? Does it work under some other OS?

I had something possibly similar happen, and it was a dodgy cable.

U320 controller (MPT Fusion thingy on Dell mobos):

Booting up was fine;
Light access was fine;
Concurrent/Heavy access caused all hell to break loose, aborts/resets/parity
errors scrolling up the screen faster than they could be read.

Once this started, a reboot was the only way of regaining sanity.

After a number of glaringly obvious clues (same problem with a replacement disk,
no problem with either/both of two U160 disks), I dropped the controller synch
speed from 160MHz to 80Mhz and the problem went away.

Got a new cable and the system worked at full speed.
