Not that anyone would think for a second that Rick is being pedantic on the
point.... it should be pointed out that the performance benefit of a true
hardware modem in terms of connection throughput and machine performance are
such that it does warrant seeking out a non software modem.

Pre-DSL availablility, I ran a client site of 8 (3 admin, 5 managers) office
workers from a dial on demand Dlink soho nat gateway product hooked up to a
serial port USR sportster external 56K modem. Attempting to address out of
hours dial on demand calls, I discovered that one worker in particular used
to travel to the office from home to use the "fast" net connection in
preference to his windows machine with internal 56K modem. The speed
conclusion would have drawn during the 9 to 5 shared access hours.

Now that they are post DSL install, I am open to offers from anyone
interested in buying what Eircom might describe as a "high speed" external
56K modem.
