Well I'm using 10.0 all the time with KDE 3.2, and its fast. I do have 512MB,
but I doubt that is the problem.

I'd hazard a guess that it may be a DMA problem.

# hdparm /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
 multcount    = 16 (on)
 IO_support   =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  1 (on)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 geometry     = 16383/255/63, sectors = 156301488, start = 0

Make sure using_dma is on.

Indeed.
