Ok,
Let me Fill in some of the blanks:
I have past experience in a small company which was practically entirely
based on Linux. So, though I have never been a linux administrator before I
do know my way around pretty well. To give you an idea, I have installed RH
6.0 lots of times and added it to a network once (with help) but have never
installed the latest kernel (nor do I know what that involves). As you might
have guessed, I am primarily a J2EE developer.
I do want something easy that is not going to have me compiling source code
ever, though I may be a developer I am not a glutten for punishment ;-)
So, at the moment I am looking between the four big dudes in the market as I
see it:
Debian,
RedHat Enterprise Edition Basic Edition
Fedora (though I am not entirely sure that this is suitable for my level).
Mandrake - which I am surprised there was so little talk of.
I hope to one day have the time/experience/courage to undertake the
installation of Gentoo on a live production environment but I don't think
that day is today!
In closing I would like to mention yesterday afternoon's sales pitch by
Michael Tiemann in the Alexander Hotel. He can definitely talk the talk.
Though preaching to the converted it felt more like he was enabling the
masses to become preachers to their bosses by giving them a mathematical
equation which *proves* that OS is better than Windows and *proves* that RH
OS is better than all others. I would have liked to have seen a debate
between him and Bill Gates.
Thank you to all who have made comments so far, I hope there will be many
more.
Andoni.
