There's your reason why, and linux-raid is doing exactly what you'd 
want it to do.

And hda? using siimage?

Is it the same block every time? Same drive every time? Do you 
possibly have a bad drive?

Try running badblocks -w on the disk (NB: overwrites data).

As a scheme? Which driver is it using? libata/sata_sil or IDE layer 
and siimage? (the latter I decided never to use when i was able to 
hang box with simple hdparm commands).

And Fedora. (well, as modules, except that it also has IDE and 
siimage built-in to kernel, which hence will find and claim your 
sil3xxx controllers long before sata_sil gets a chance).
