You've got several possibilities. Depending on weither you want to
keep your existing drive or replace it. I've oftenly installed the new
drive as hda and the existing drive with data as hdb then used a
'replace_with_your_linux_flavor' liveCD then booted on it and
partition the new hda, copied all directories with preserving
ownership (rsync is your friend here) then chroot to the new hda and
run lilo/grub, remove liveCD, hdb and try to boot up.
