The programs may have the same aim,
but they are completely different.

and the other does not work quite so well.
(I've actually had several problems with synaptic,
and so have others if you scan the fedora-list mailing list.)

I think yum has some kind of official role with Fedora,
and so is probably much better tested in that role.

Maybe that is a good idea if you are not in a hurry.
