It is a moderated list for those who are not subscribed. I have no problems
with how we work the list ( even though automatic responses to unsubscribed
users would be nice). As mentioned we get between 1000 and 3000 (as of
yesterday) messages the vast majority of which are not relevant. However with
a small bit of filtering before even looking to see which messages might be
allowed thru brings the number of messages to actually look at to 10-30 per
The reason why we want to allow these messages in thru moderation is that for
many OpenOffice.org users their knowledge of how to users computers is quite
limited - and their knowledge of how to use email (not to mention
subscription only mailing lists) frequently leaves a lot to be desired.

Unfortunately I have no control over the mailing list software :(

Not really as most of these users are very basic. But we still want to allow
them to get help. We have found that many of these users do eventually
subscribe and become productive contributors of the mailing lists.
Anyway, if anyone else is interested in the perl script (it is quite simple),
I can forward it.
