MUST be a blank line. If not, the additional text is just more (invalid) headers, rather than the body you probably meant it to be. It is valid to have a message with no body, and most MTAs are forgiving enough to basically ignore the invalid headers. Some mail clients will display *everything* in such a message as body text (headers and all), e.g. Mozilla/Thunderbird.

I guess in most of your tests it doesn't matter if there's a body or not. If your SA test was a BODY test, it likely would matter though, as there was no body in your test message.

BTW, From:, To:, Subject: and Date: are required headers, but again most MTAs are forgiving in this regard.

All AFAIK! See RFC 2822 and the older 822.
