The difference is that an Ethernet modem would work without reading any HOWTO.

I've just observed that the chance of a USB device working under Linux
are about the same as the chance of a plumber coming to mend a leak
on a Friday night, ie it has been known to happen.

I tried this modem Sir Anthony sent me last week.
The ethernet connection worked as is.
The USB connection did not work as is.
It didn't even work under Windows-2000.
Admittedly I probably did something wrong.

I don't know whether to send this modem back.
I know Sir Anthony is on his uppers,
and can be seen busking in Grafton Street,
