I had a similar problem once and traced it to my /tmp directory. I have
my /tmp on a separate partition and this partition became full because
an unrelated application was spitting out a massive log file to /tmp.
When I later tried to log into KDE it started logging in and then XFree
appeared to reset itself. The problem was that KDE stores some session
information in /tmp. Check that your
1) /tmp is not full
2) is world writable

Maybe an examination of your XFree log in /var/log/ might shed some
light?
