Drastic! 

I know RedHat/Fedora (you did say you were using one of these?) is tied 
into Gnome and a lot of the /etc/X11 scripts rely on a Gnome install. 
Maybe if you just tried to reinstall the base Gnome packages.

Alternativily, edit your /etc/X11/prefdm script which decides which 
window manager to use so that it executes:

exec `which kdm` $* >/dev/null 2>&1
exit 0

Add it in at the start or after the test for an auto-login request. This 
is a long shot and it's only to make sure the KDE's desktop manager 
runs (which isn't the default in RedHat/Fedora AFAIK).
