[ILUG] equivalent to windows start command..

I remember in a WinNT DOS box you could go start hello.doc and it would
open hello.doc in word (or whatever you assigned .doc to)...

Is there a simple command line utility for Linux to do this? I do start
x.pdf and it starts my pdf viewer whatever it may be etc..

I know I can use nautilus to click through but every so often I just want
to open a document and not wonder what app I need to use :-)
