which driver? And why do you think SCSI "emulation" sucks? (NB: It's
not really emulation).

No. Why would how Linux presents a drive to userspace have any
bearing on the BIOS booting or not booting from that drive?

If you have grub on the MBR of the SATA drive, then it's a BIOS
problem, most likely. Does the SCSI controller have any drives
attached? Does it have an option to disable its onboard ROM?
