With promise's drivers they're dreadful cards, eg i remember
installing RH9 or somesuch on promiseraid and it corrupted as it was
installing! (least after rebooting into installed machine i noticed 
lots of corrupted files).

They're fine if you use treat them as normal controllers and use 
Linux software RAID, as god intended. Apparently the newer Promise 
SATA SX cards have some interesting features for software RAID 
support. (just wait for Jeff Garzik to add support for it - dont ever 
use a promise driver!)
