Because if I have everything else redundant, it'd be a bit annoying 
to have the machine die due to swap.

Not in the long run, no. In the short run it hopefully means I can
attend to the disk failure at my leisure. (for software RAID this can
depend on underlying driver dealing with errors reasonably gracefully
- software RAID itself can declare disks dead and deal with it, if
given the chance.).
