Caveat:

Before you go checking chipsets, though, if "Typhoon webcam" doesn't 
have a Linux driver... I'd accept that checking the Vendor/Device id's 
is the next step.

If the Vendor & Device ids don't yeild something meaningful, then yes, 
go check the chipset... I'd say 90%+ of all Webcam chipsets (if not the 
specific Vendor/Devices) have been identified and supported, or are in 
the process of the same.
