The key thing, IMLU, is sysfs, you have to have /sys - udev needs it.

After that, make 100% sure your fses are mounted by some kind of 
meta-data (extX label and LABEL= in fstab, or else either an LVM or 
MD device) - not by physical device.

Custom kernel actually might be /easier/ btw, if you have compiled in 
devices needed for boot. You wont need to worry as much about the 
mkinitrd part. (though you almost certainly do want the updated 
initscripts ;) ).

Final tip: make a backup of the static /dev, eg to /dev-static, so 
that if needs be you can mount --bind /dev-static /dev from single 
user mode and hopefully still boot without udev.

NB: my udev experience is with debian, which gave me no cause to 
actually have to look into udev ;)
