[ILUG] How to install safely?

I want to install Fedora-3 on my Sony Picturebook laptop (C1VFK),
but I'm worried that if it doesn't run I'll be stuck,
as the only connection between this laptop and the rest of the world
is through its PCMCIA slot, using a WiFi or Ethernet card.

I have no confidence that upgrading FC-2 to FC-3 will work,
so I thought I'd install FC-3 in parallel on another partition.
(I invested in a 60GB hard disk, so have plenty of room.)

I presently have /boot on hda2 and / on hda3.
I'm thinking of installing FC-3 on the 4GB hda12, which is currently unused,
and using the same /boot partition, without re-formatting it.
(I already have the ISO files on the hard disk.)
I'll save my current grub.conf as grub.conf.old.
Hopefully, I should be able to use this if FC-3 doesn't work.

Is there any better way of doing this?
