[ILUG] [OT] Eircom and broadband woes

It took me a few months, but when I finally kicked up enough of a fuss
(easily over 30 calls... persistence pays) I got an engineer to come out
to Malahide to have a look.

We weren't even home when he called, and he diagnosed the problem
through the window. The wires came in one side of the corridor, the
socket was on the other side, and the floor was tiled. Apparently it's
not unusual for people to tile over telephone wiring - all the little
tile movements had worn away and compressed the wires.

That's enough of the story - the moral is call, call, and CALL again. If
someone can't help, ask for someone who can. Find the location of the
exchange, measure the distance, and quote it back to them. Ask
neighbours if they have got broadband. If the operator forgets your
details, ask for the complaints department (they follow up on complaints
about a month later to see if they are resolved). Always escalate to the
management.

Eventually they'll relent and send someone.
