I would never knowingly run a Web browser as root.  That's an awful
idea, in my view.

Firefox shares a design defect with some other Web browsers that some
system directories that need to be user-writeable to allow installation
of add-in / extension software are root-owned by default.  A prudent 
user, upon observing failure of extension installation, notices which
directory trees are affected, and then chgrps or chowns as necessary.

At various points, on my workstations, I've had to make that correction
to /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/ , /var/lib/mozilla-firefox/ , and possibly
some other locations.  But it's really not difficult to find and fix the
trees in question.
