[ILUG] Interface problems

Ive set shorewall up as per the two interface example on thier site.

Im using RULE as the Linux distro on the shorewall box as its an old PII
but I dont think this should make any odds.  Originally this box had one
nic to which I added a second and Ive been told that its likey that 
Linux would
hold the inital default route or somesuch.As a result there would have been
a lot of  messing with the configs of eth0 and eth1. Which again could cause
grief.with the routing table.

Ive managed to get connectivity to the shorewall box in a roundabout way
which Im sure isnt the right way to do it!

I manually reset the default to eth0 by issuing route del default eth1
and then route add default eth0 . There was still no
joy with the ping but I noticed that the default was set to 0.0.0.0 on
eth0 so I added GATEWAY=10.10.10.254 brought eth0 down and up and viola
connectivity! However this does not hold on reboot I have to manually
reset the default on each restart. There must be a way round this?

ROUTE   reads
default   "cpc3-bele3-3-0-   0.0.0.0   UG   0 0   0   eth0"

When I got connectivity  I then tried pinging from PC1 (from the 
shorewall diagram
this is simply a client pc attached to the hub) I can ping
10.10.10.100 (its eth0) 10.10.10.254 (gateway) but not 82.3.211.238
(shorewall boxes eth0) or beyond.

Im guessing im best trying to sort the shorewall box out first before
trying to get connectivity from PC1.
