The router, if it's the Cayman netopia that I think is still the
standard unit, provides an ethernet port so that will be no problem if
the machine you wish to connect has an NIC. It does also have a usb
connection that doesn't have a linux driver so that's maybe where
they're pulling the Win / Mac only from.

Yup, you enter those via the router's web interface. Though bear in
mind the router has a built in firewall. If you wish your firewall
machine itself to be presented to net for VPN setup etc and better low
level control you'll need to put the router into bridging mode to
transparently present the connection. In this case you'd also need
PPPoE (Roaring penguin for example) configured to do your authentication
for the connection.
