I think I remember seeing tomcat in the debian unstable packages,
although it was an old version if I remember correctly, so I didn't
bother going near it. I'm using a binary version of 4.1.x on woody
without any problems, although I had to compile mod_jk (loading it into
the deb packaged apache 1.3).
If you want to use the rpm versions on Debian, just use alien to convert
the rpm to a deb and install that.
