[ILUG] KDE crawls on Gentoo - flys on Mandrake?

Wonder if anyone has seen this problem. I have a machine that can boot into
Mandrake/Gentoo/Win98. I have used Mandrake 10.0 on this machine for quite a
while and it works fine. However KDE under Gentoo (2004.2) initally used to
freeze randomly but (Append="noapic nolapic acpi=off") in lilo.conf seemed to
solve most of that but there are still problems: Sometimes KDE goes into a
crawl where kdeinit appears to be gobbling up 90+% of my CPU and most of my
memory. By crawl I mean watching the screen redraw line by line and waiting a
couple of minutes for firefox to load. Most of the time it all works fine,
maybe for hours and then something triggers the problem. Killing X seems to
solve the issue. Googling around I have tried most of the fixes I have found
- checking /etc/hosts, apic. The machine is an XP1800 + 512mb so its quite
capable of doing the job. Any hints?
Kevin.
