 	find /etc/ppp -type f -exec grep ppp {} \; -print

Most likely you have 'mtu 1500' and 'mru 1500' set in 
/etc/ppp/options - comment these out and try again[1].

1. NB: Would it kill the ADSL providers to bump up the MTUs on their 
link with Eircom (for eircom wholesale provision) or the ATM VC with 
the customer by 8 bytes so the encapsulared PPP link doesnt have to 
suffer 1492 MTU?

(and yeah, Eircom'd probably also have to bump up MTU on some of 
their links / networks)
