Doesn't id still use OSS for audio? I was under the impression that the
current built was OSS, like Q3A, and a 5.1/surround ALSA version would
possibly appear at a later stage along with an A64 build (Oooh, yes
plaease - I'm putting together an A64 box right now)

If using OSS I would kill all sound daemons before running DooM (artsd,
esd). If using ALSA I would check if OSS emulation is enabled. With a
2.6 kernel system I think it involves adding the following lines to
/etc/modprobe.conf - but don't quote me on this :)

alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss

Philip, could you run doom3 from an xterm and paste the output?
