100 megabit isn't *that* important, except uplink to the server. The
real difference is switched over shared (i.e. hub), which makes a big,
big, big difference for x-terminals. Not that this is expensive, but
the existing equipment might be a hub.
We have one Dell box serving 20 terminals (1600SC, 2x2.8GHz, 2GB, SCSI),
which cost about 3.5K this time last year including UPS. It's also file
and mail server, and average CPU load on it is roughly, oh, zero, although
it occasionally spikes.
On 20 terminals, we're using 1.2-1.5GB usually, but this can spike a good
bit higher, so more RAM is probably our next upgrade.
Our network is gigabit from the server to the switch, and 100mbit from
there out.
