I'll note that 100% Linux compatibility and reliability is not
necessarily a showstopper:  My 1998 Sony VAIO PCG-505TX _still_ has an
undocumented Firewire port, but it's easily ignored.  

Very recent iBooks' inclusion of an "Airport Extreme" (Broadcom) wireless
chipset, so someone stuck in that boat would need, for now, to get a USB
wireless device (because Broadcom is being a great git about it).  But
that's about it.  XFree86 4.4.0 and X.org seem to have caught up on
video chipsets, from what I've seen.
