As far as I know, they were ported from BSD, not running on a wrapper,
but I haven't looked at the source code, so I wouldn't be able to say
that for sure. What I know is, that the Linux driver actively is being
developed and the HAL is unavoidable due to FCC regulations (but that is
a completely different discussion).

I've heard of people successfully running with Atheros MiniPCIs in Apple
notebooks. The only notebook manufacturer, that I am aware of
restricting to certain minipci card brands/types is IBM.
