[ILUG] {Q} adding/upgrading DIMMs?

for assorted reasons I want to add some memory to my
system at home. it currently has 256Mb in one DIMM.

what the manufacturer's manual says (in full) is:

    “• Two memory banks.
     • Supports up to two 3.3v DRAM DIMM modules.
     • Supports up to 1 GByte of system memory using
        two 512 MB DIMM modules.
     • 133 Mhz SDRAM interface.
     • ECC memory checking is supported.
     • Serial Presence Detect (SPD) support. The BIOS
automatically detects the speed, type, and size
        of the memory used.
    ‥
Please use only the DIMM modules as described in the
    specifications.”

I _think_ the key data here is 133Mhz SDRAM 3.3v DIMM
(with ECC and SPD). and whilst not explicitly said,
I am reading into the above that if there are two DIMMs,
then the two DIMMs should be “identical” (for some value
 of “identical”).

however, a price list I picked up from one of the parts
shops on the way home tonight is listing things like:

    • 512 Mo DDR400 (Mo is the Français for Mb)
    • 512 Mo DDR400 MARQUE
    • 512 Mo DDR-2 533
    • 256 Mo sodimm SDRAM13
    • 512 Mo sodimm DDR2700 ( sorry, I haven't a clew
                                what “sodimm” means? )

which leaves me rather baffled ... can anyone clarify,
or point me to site(s?) which can clarify? I will be
using Google™ later when I have a chance (I'm unable
 to ATM).

( if it helps, the last time I ever upgraded memory
on my own the term “core” was accurate .... ;-)
every time since then, I have just been given the
right DIMM or chip or whatever (plus, at least once,
a soldering iron), so all this is just a tiny bit
  new to me .... )

cheers!
