For me it works no matter the size, however when I use gnome-terminal or
xterm, it doesn't work. It's likely they do not implement the X protocol
appropriately, though I admit it is strange, xterm is developed by the
X11 folks and gnome-terminal uses gtk which is likely to handle it
correctly.
If vim in the terminal works correctly than it is very likely a problem
of the terminal program, since vim will handle the paste itself when it
is run in the terminal.
I'm sorry I do not have a better answer.
