[ILUG] Still no joy with Eircom hotspot

A few weeks ago the ILUG gurus advised me
that the ESSID for Eircom's free hotspots is "eircom",
and that has got me much nearer to heaven.

But I still cannot actually connect.
Under Linux, my machine sees the Access Point
(in the phone kiosk in Dun Laoghaire by the Pavilion theatre),
as shown by iwconfig ,
but my route table is not very helpful,
and I cannot ping even www.eircom.net (by its IP address).

My experience under Windows is much the same.
I'm told that I have been connected for 11 minutes,
and that the card is working well,
but I am unable to access anything.

I think I must be missing something obvious,
but what is it?
There are only 3 more versions of coffee to try at Insomnia
(the cafe just opposite the kiosk).
