[ILUG] Still no joy with Eircom hotspot

I experience a similar problem, though in Dublin the ESSID for the 
access points built into phonebooths is EircomXXX where XXX is 3 digits.
(use `iwlist scan`)
Running dhclient will assign an IP, and the only machine that
responds to a broadcast ping is a router running a http-based admin
interface 
and a telnet login. 
Opening a web browser so, say google.com doesnt redirect to an eircom 
page explaining anything, Nobody who works for Eircom knows anything 
about wireless and if im going to pay 1.50/min for tech support, i may 
aswell pay for the BTOpenZone.
