Just installed my first Ubuntu box last night - server install on a
headless box that was already running redhat with / on a RAID partition.
(Ubuntu Array 7 Hoary Hedgehog Pre-Release)
After I figured out the rather counter-intuitive disk partitioning
thing, it all fell into place and I didn't even have to set up the
raidset again - and was more than happy to install on top of it. Damn
good stuff!
The server install is quoted as a 'minimalist' install - which is
blatantly is not, installing hotplug and associated chuff on my box for
one thing, but I wasn't overly pushed about this as Ubuntu is a desktop
oriented distro and the server setup is a new thing. I expect it to get
better with time.
One thing which did annoy me is the complete lack of an sshd installed
or running. Once I had networking configured and the install done (and
root unlocked and passworded, etc.) I walked away, assuming I could
continue the install from a terminal on my network, rather than my
rather suboptimal KVM setup (which is adequate for the tiny amount of
time I need local access to my headless boxen, but no more.) I was
rather annoyed to have to walk back upstairs and KVM an 'apt-get install
openssh-server' before being able to talk to my box over the network.
Again, I would anticipate that this will be rectified in later 'server'
releases.
Apart from that, at some point last night some RAID / ext3-fs badness
happened resulting in / being remounted ro - I suspect this is to do
with the shinkiness of the hardware on which Ubuntu is running, but I
never had this with RedHat 9 / FC1 on the same box... If I see it again
I'll have a good poke to see what's going wrong.
So, long-story summarised: I like ubuntu (server install) in general.
Seems to be quick to install and contains more apps than you'll need
(and more available through the l33t power of apt-get.) Missing sshd is
a glaring ommission, but one I expect to be fixed soon. And a 291MB
install is not too bad. All in all, a good distro, certainly for people
not used to Linux or happy to take lots of 'sensible' defaults.
Best regards,
-->Gar
