Ubuntu is a great desktop but you'll be left with heartache if you want
a solid server, I reckon. Best go with something like Slackware where
you're in control of the whole process from the ground up - as long as
you're comfortable with that, of course. Or just use Debian - it's built
to be rock solid. Ubuntu is built to be current and feature complete.

Defaults are great for something where there are expected behaviours
such as desktops but server configurations vary wildly depending on
their specific purposes - starting with a default is a dubious advantage.

I did note one annoyance in Ubuntu. Your keyboard layout is not added to
X's configuration, just Gnome's. Major stubling block for a new user who
uses a non-standard layout - can't log in! (I believe it just uses the
default national layout).

I never got round to checking if this was filed as a bug before I
switched to Slack. Very irresponsible, I know but I no longer have the
environment at hand to file one now...
