I had same problem a few months ago,the solution was to compile the ide
driver(my case was the VIA82CXXX) not as a module but directly into
kernel. The "HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted" went away for
me and the drive throughput went from about 2megs a second to around 20
or more..
