I've recently bought a Nokia 6230 & after a little initial confusion
and with a little help & a lot of Googling I can
upload/download files (mp3's, jpegs, mpegs) to/from phone.

I bought a bluetooth dongle from carphone warehouse where I got phone -
little purple one, works fine (about E40).

Sending stuff from phone to Linux "just works" on my aging FC1 setup.

gnome-obex-send just sends stuff "to the phone" & you engage in a
dialogue at the phone end to specify destination. Problem is that it
uses built-in memory which is limited, even if you have a 1Gb mmc.

obexftp is your friend if you want to send files to a specified memory
card & folder

Lidl recently had card readers for 14.99 which Linux supports, much
faster than bt if you want to send a lot of files.

Only thing that I needed the Windows Nokia software for is to build
playlists from the mp3's that I have sent to the phone.
