Which, one notes, means it's all the more peculiar that they couldn't
either use it in _compliance_ with its licensing terms or write their
own replacement code.

We're evidently supposed to think "Hey, it's only a small bit of code,
so them ripping off the copyright holders is basically OK."  But my
interpretation is "Excuse me?  Are you claiming to be incompetent or
dishonest?  Please pick one."
