  | A friend of mine wants to try linux, and is looking to me.
  | I would ususally reccomend Mandrake [ ... ]
  |
  | But he has no internet connection, so it must be stable (ish)
  | from the start. He wants to edit videos from his digital
  | camcorder and do regular desktop stuff. [ ... ]

I usually avoid these distro wars, but in this case,
may have a useful reference point....

I've used both SuSE 7.3 (Professional) and SUSE 9.1
(also Professional) without any known need to ever
update, albeit I have selectively updated both
(_very_ selectively, as I use a 56Kbaud dialup).
 mostly, I am off-line.

however, I do not have the faintest idea what video
 editing capabilites SuSE/SUSE has.

( actually, a dialup connection to a "free" ISP is
not a Big Deal to set up, so you might want to try
and talk yer friend around to something like that
as a backup? the cost is nominally just that of
a suitable (external) modem and the 'phone calls,
and you don't _need_ to set up a firewall, proxies,
or so on, albeit you may feel more comfortable if
  you do.... )

cheers!
