I saw something like this recently when building an updated nvidia
module for my graphics card. After downloading the source (2.6.11.9) and
uncompressing it in /usr/src, I had to rename the directory to match my
running kernel (2.6.11.9-amd64-k8). Another thing to be sure of is that
the module you're compiling outside the kernel is compiled with the same
version of gcc that was used to compile the kernel itself.

modinfo amedyn 
or
modprobe amedyn 

should give you a more verbose error message so you can trace the exact
problem.
