| There's "eCos" though, a RT tiny OS for micro's:

yes, I am aware of eCos. the discussion was about Linux.
I quote the eCos FAQ:
“As eCos originated from Red Hat, probably most famous
for its distribution of the Linux Operating System,
it has become a common misconception that eCos is Linux
or in some way based on Linux. However eCos is a
completely separate product, with a separate source base.”

so what is yer point?
eCos is not the only tiny RTO/S, albeit off the top of
my head I cannot think of another one which is FOSS.
the eCos FAQ goes to claim something which is rather
typical of many RTO/Ses these days; namely, support for
POSIX.1a-like APIs (ISO standard C API is de rigour):
“eCos does have an EL/IX level 1 compatibility layer though,
allowing it to be compatible with many of the Linux APIs.”
the discussion can now return to Linux. which is not
making inroads as either a tiny RTO/S or a hard-RT O/S.
(Montavista, at least, is supporting/driving work on
improving the determinability of Linux, and in general
on improving its hard-RTness.)
cheers!
