There is a lot better chance of a distro kernel working than the vanilla
one, the distros test their kernels, vanilla ones aren't...

Of course if your distro only runs a 2.6.5 kernel and won't upgrade it
then you have another issue.... I do like the fact that davej the Fedora
kernel dude, tries to track vanilla kernels closely with some added
testing..
