I was up in Ordnance Survey in the Phoenix Park a few weeks ago,
and I saw that they were selling CDs with map data reasonably cheaply
(around 50 euro, IIRC).
I didn't look closely, as I was not interested in that,
but my impression was that a single CD covered an area like a county.

I don't know how easy it is to use this data with GPS?
